Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has hired George Stathakopoulos as vice president of corporate information security, in its battle with the government and law enforcement agencies for the iPhone encryption case.

Mr. Stathakopoulos’s responsibilities at Apple are to be in charge of the protection of the company’s corporate assets, as well as the equipment, both hardware and software, which the company employs to develop new solutions and latest products. Moreover, reports have indicated that the Apple’s first Vice President of Corporate Information Security will report to the Chief Financial Officer, Luca Maestri.

Geroge Stathakopoulos was previously employed at Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) as vice president of information security, and before that, worked at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) as its general manager of product security. Mr. Stathakopoulos reportedly joined the Cupertino giant around a week ago, to fill a position which has been created in order to give him a chance to put his security and information expertise to use, and help Apple in its well-publicized legal proceedings related to iPhone security and encryption.

Mr. Stathakopoulos’s LinkedIn profile, however, still states that he works at Amazon; a company he served for around 6 years, before he spent eight years at Microsoft at a time when the company was focused on moving towards a much more sophisticated and improved security protocol.

As Apple remains locked in a battle with the government over the San Bernardino iPhone encryption case, among several others in the aftermath of it, Mr. Stathakopoulos seemingly has a tough job at his hands. He’ll be putting the expertise he has gained from his career in the tech world so far, in a job which could potentially shape how the rest of his career unfolds.

Particularly at Microsoft, he is thought to have been a major contributor to its improved security, and that is the reputation that he is risked by taking this job at such a crucial time in the company’s history.
