In a decision that came off as both surprising and frustrating to fans, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced this week that it’s cancelling the exclusive Scalebound. The action-RPG announced at E3 2014 was a collaboration between Microsoft and Platinum Games.
Microsoft issued a statement for the cancellation, and Platinum Games and game director Hideki Kamiya have now also addressed their fans. Platinum Games CEO, Kenichi Sato, said in a statement: “very disappointed things ended up this way” and that they “will strive to continue delivering high-quality games to you”. Hideki Kamiya took to Twitter and expressed his thoughts on the cancellation in a series of tweets.
The game director apologized for the cancellation and promised to “work extra hard” in the future. Kamiya also shot down the rumor that he took off time from development to recuperate from mental exhaustion.
The decision behind the cancellation is not clear, but multiple reports have revealed that Scalebound’s development wasn’t going according to schedule. Some key team members took time off from development due to heavy workload, it in effect further delayed the game, reported Eurogamer. The move hasn’t sat well with everyone, and this is now the topic of conversion in gaming forums, the future of Xbox and why Microsoft has disbanded projects like Fable Legends and Scalebound that were key attractions of Xbox lineup.
